Evangelist beaten to death in Bangladesh
Evangelist beaten to death in Bangladesh
Free Christian Churches of Bangladesh has been active for 25 years and has 320 churches and 30,500 members. The church has faced severe problems during the second Iraq War, and, at various times, evangelists were persecuted.
Police Sub-inspector Mohammed Wahid, of the Sahabag police station, said, "On Sept. 12, at around 8 p.m., I got a message that an unidentified man was found seriously wounded outside of Suhrawardi Park. I rushed to the scene and found the wounded man, and immediately took him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, we came to learn from him that his name is Swopon Mondol and that he is a worker of Free Christian Churches of Bangladesh. His wife, Lucky Mondol, came to the hospital when she was informed about the incident. I left him at the hospital for treatment since his wife was there. Later, I came to know that Mondol died at 12:10 p.m., meaning in the early hours of Sept. 13.
"From local people, I came to know that Swopon Mondol and three or four people with him ran after some Dhaka University students over the issue of a theft. One of the students ran to the nearby campus and brought more students, who then beat Mondol brutally, until he fell down onto the floor."
Lucky Mondol, the wife of the dead Christian evangelist, said, "My only son, Diptoo (age 10), and I rushed to the hospital. Some youth came to the hospital and wanted money, threatening me. My husband was fighting for his life, and this group of violent youths were threatening me and demanding 1400 taka, saying that my husband stole one of their mobile phones. I found myself helpless. I prayed for my husband.
"I am afraid to file a police report. Who will guarantee my safety and give me money to pay for the case? I don't doubt that the violent people who beat my husband brutally and even came to the hospital afterward might kill me if I file a police report. And now it’s a challenge for me and my son Diptoo to even survive, because my husband was the only earning member of our family."
Sulekha Mondol, Mondol's sister, said, "We are so poor, and we are in the minority. My brother Swopon was very pious and very patient. He preached the good news of Christ, yet such a good man was killed like an animal. Now we are afraid, and we don't feel safe. Many Christian evangelists have been killed, and no one has gotten justice. On Sept. 13, we buried my brother in fear and hoping for justice in our village. We could hardly arrange for the money to bury my brother and transport his body from the hospital to our village in Khulna."
Bishop Albert P. Mirdha of Free Christian Churches of Bangladesh said, "Swopon Mondol was really a very active church worker over the last 14 years, and we are all shocked by his murder. Minorities are not safe in Bangladesh."

Love, sex and the position of women in Bangladesh
Love, sex and the position of women in Bangladesh
Dhaka , Bangladesh, September 25 — Sex and love are forces that, every day, lead to new problems and new possibilities around the world. In male-dominated societies, like in Bangladesh, women can often be treated as sexual objects. Women experience sexual harassment, abduction, rape, and even murder. The natural desire for sex and love has brought women unknown misery. The fact is, when a woman gets raped, it is not the woman who has sex, but the man who was the active person having sex; yet, in Bangladesh, all the shame goes to the woman. The woman is the one who is suppressed by sexual violence, and who may experience depression afterward, but the man is unaffected.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib said, “Sexual desire and anger are diffused throughout the universe. Coming and going, people suffer in pain.” Religion strictly limits people's mentality and behavior, especially in the Subcontinent.
The major world religions have a strongly conservative stance on sex and love. The Bible starts with the complex idea of humankind's beginning and how the first man, Adam, was satisfied after seeing his mate, Eve. This is how the religion materialized the woman, the religion brings Adam as an adult and eve as tolls of an adult and their main responsibility was to populate the world. This is how the most of the other religion have their own way to treat woman as a sexual tool of reproduction and pleasure.
Bangladesh is heading towards an increase of crimes against women and children that is highly related with sex and sexuality. Crimes are the direct result of the mentalities of the criminals. While most people argue that the number of people who commit crimes are smaller than the number of people who oppose crimes, this remains an open question: why does this majority, which outnumbers the criminals, fail to bring an end to crimes against women and children? Why is it that, every day, the newspaper continues to have headlines like, “A juvenile girl raped by an imam in rural Bangladesh”? Some people argue that a criminal's mentality can be improved through the practice of religion, but, historically, religions have failed to inspire man enough to keep him from committing sexual violence.
In Bangladesh, the conservative religion of Islam dominates the lives of the majority of people and leads the nation into chaos and towards an increase in sexual crime. Islam's views on sex and sexuality are the main tools used to propagate the Islamic demonization that objectifies women; as the Hadith says, "The right of the husband is that when he calls his wife to have sex, she should not deny him herself." (Tialissi).
The root of the problem is society's mentality; it’s not only the mentality of man, but society's understanding of woman that needs to become more positive, especially in regard to violence related to sex and love. Many special laws have been introduced and many criminals were sentenced to death, but, in the end, there has been a failure in deterring sexual crimes.
We need to dig out the rotten root of religions that inspire men to be inhumane towards women. We need a global revival to create a free and fearless world for women, and then the day will come when we will be able live in peace together as men and women.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Religion is to do right. It is to love, it is to serve, it is to think, and it is to be humble.” We need to bring forth the religion that inspires us to think and live as human beings, rather than simply as men or as women.

Minority groups on the Indian subcontinent
Minority groups on the Indian subcontinent
Dhaka , Bangladesh, October 02 — For centuries, ethnic and religious minorities have been living lives of suffering on the South Asian subcontinent, in the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan. Minorities are not created by God, but are created by political systems. Before going any further, let us look at the reason why minorities were produced in the region. If you go to India or Pakistan or some other part of the South Asian subcontinent, you will see similar kinds of minorities. In a liberal democracy, we cannot deny minority rights, yet we have failed to protect the minorities from oppression and suppression.
In Europe, minorities were produced by lengthy religious and national wars. There was a need to protect minorities from oppression in Europe, and so there eventually came to be regional guarantees and a charter of human rights, which ensure minority rights.
During colonial rule by the British, the question of minority rights, which had been struggled with in Europe for more than 200 years, reemerged on the Indian subcontinent in a way unique to the Indian situation. The British reinforced the distinct identities of the various ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic groups in nearly all of the countries of the Subcontinent. The British clearly categorized the identities of these groups in their census and in the manuals for their administrators.
The Partition of India saw India come out from under British rule, which had been established in the mid-eighteenth century. The division of the country into India and Pakistan led the Indian people into one of the great tragedies in human history. Mohandas Gandhi opposed the division of India along the lines of religion, saying, “My whole soul rebels against the idea that Hinduism and Islam represent two antagonistic cultures and doctrines. To assent to such a doctrine is, for me, a denial of God.”
Law and order completely broke down; many died in riots, massacres, or just from the hardships of their flights to safety. What ensued was one of the largest migrations in recorded history. According to Richard Symonds, "At the lowest estimate, half a million people perished and twelve million became homeless."
A huge population exchange occurred between the two newly-formed states of Pakistan and India. In the aftermath of partition, about 14.5 million people crossed the borders; 7,226,000 Muslims went to Pakistan from India, while 7,249,000 Hindus and Sikhs moved to India from Pakistan. Part of the British scheme to “divide and rule” was ultimately successful; they successfully divided the people who had previously stood united against them.
The legacy of hatred can be seen wherever the British Union Flag flies, from hatred among Hindus, Muslims and Christians in the name of religion, to politics as a force that still divides us. Every day, we are defining a new type of minority. The division continued when, in 1971, an armed conflict pitting West Pakistan against East Pakistan gave birth to a new nation, the independent nation of Bangladesh.
The countries of the South Asian subcontinent, which formerly had colonial, patriarchal state structures and now have new models of governance, are failing to accommodate diversity. In the centralized state structures of most governments, they have failed to include minority groups effectively in the state machinery. Bangladesh and Pakistan are shining examples of this; in Pakistan, from Iskandar Mirza to Asif Ali Zardari or from Liaquat Ali Khan to Yousaf Raza Gillani, not a single religious minority person has been elected president or prime minister of Pakistan for more than five decades. On the other hand, in Bangladesh, the suppressed religious and ethnic minorities have never had one of their own as president or prime minister of Bangladesh; from Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to Zillur Rahman or Tajuddin Ahmad to Sheikh Hasina Wazed, the majority has always triumphed over the last four decades.
More than half a century after independence, the countries of the Indian subcontinent are still struggling to resolve majority-minority issues, which are feeding long-running conflicts around the borders and are affecting regional and global security. Whether the Gujarat riot in India in 2002 or the post-election violence in Bangladesh in 1996 and 2001 or any recent attack on Christians in Pakistan, minority issues cause undesirable suffering and extend hatred and extremism all across the world, across all borders and boundaries.
Proposal for a South Asian regional union
Proposal for a South Asian regional union
Dhaka , Bangladesh, October 09 — Throughout the triumphs and tragedies of the internal politics of Bangladesh, especially at a moment of crisis or a defining point for the nation, the neighboring countries of India and Pakistan have always played a vital role in many ways.
The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Charter was formally adopted on Dec. 8, 1985 by the governments of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, to provide a platform for the peoples of South Asia to work together in a spirit of friendship, trust and understanding and to accelerate the process of economic and social development in its member states. But it’s really sad that SAARC itself has failed to accelerate the practical cooperation of the leaders of the member states for greater development; in reality, it has become a platform of shame and failure.
There is a long story of plotting and problems that can go on and on for many pages. But I want to share the dream of a united union of secular states, comprised of three countries of South Asia - Bangladesh, India, Pakistan - and one country of south central Asia - Afghanistan.
There is struggle for unity in this region, in name of religion, power and politics, where Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan can come out of their conflicts; one example is the Kashmir conflict, where both India and Pakistan refer to Kashmir as an "integral part" of their respective countries, leading their nations and the region into further conflict and crisis.
India and Pakistan have fought wars over Kashmir; Islamic militancy has grown in these countries, with the mood of hatred providing a welcome environment for the insurgency. We need to work with India and Pakistan to resolve this crisis, and that will be possible with a union of secular states. Unless India and Pakistan sit together to resolve the problem, it will never be solved. The root of religious oppression is interrelated with the growing crisis in this region. Also, any crises involving India, Pakistan and Afghanistan affect Bangladesh. In the same way, any problem that is related to religion or politics obviously powerfully affects the other countries in the region.
I dream of a union of secular states, not an atheist or Hindu or Islamic union of states. A union of secular states will lead with the concept of secularism, whereby the states in the union are officially neutral in matters of religion, neither supporting nor opposing any particular religious beliefs or practices. Where the state treats all its citizens equally regardless of religion and does not give preferential treatment to a citizen from a particular religion over those from other religions.
In the union, there would need to be a centrally planned economy with a macroeconomic stabilization policy. The economy would be directed based on economic democracy, by adopting a very firm focus on national planning with a series of five-year plans. The dreams and expectations of the small minority of corporate shareholders to the majority of public stakeholders should be positively reflected in the union's economic plan. Whereas the people will come under one umbrella, the union will be a platform for change; every citizen will be a change-maker. There would need to be a unique currency. The union should imitate the Asian Tiger economies within their first 10 years.
By encouraging economic interdependence within the union, the union will be able to deal effectively with problems from outside competitors.
The education system should be a progressive process of inculcating ideas, attitudes, and cognitive strategies, enriched with international, environmental, scientific and professional methodologies. The states should ensure the right to education by applying the same standard to all their citizens, while the politics of the union should be taught systematically to everyone, from the lower to the upper classes. The union, based on democratic centralism, would practice direct democracy. This will be a critical combination of two different democratic processes.
To bring forth the change in the region is not easy as simply writing down ideas. I want recall the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th U.S. president, “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, make violent revolution inevitable." G. K. Chesterton also said, “You can never have a revolution in order to establish a democracy. You must have a democracy in order to have a revolution.”
Every revolution was first a thought in one man's mind, which then spread to others. This thought will spread to the nations of the region; it will not go backwards. One day, the nations of our region will not be named in connection with any violence, but will be called the land of prosperity and possibility.

Beauty a curse in Bangladesh
Beauty a curse in Bangladesh
Some people might say that beauty becomes a curse for a woman who is raped. But I disagree with the idea that the woman's physical beauty is a curse, because it is not beauty that causes sexual violence; the main cause is the beast inside of man. Not all of the women or girls who get raped exhibit extreme physical beauty.
Why does the rapist not rape the mother, sister or daughter in their home who may be more beautiful than the woman or girl they rape? The question is what prevents them from raping their mother, sisters or daughter. If it is religious norms, then somehow the same religious norms fail to stop them from raping someone else. Otherwise, the news just never makes it out.
In Bangladesh on any given morning, if you look at the newspaper you will see news about various forms of violence against females of different ages, from two-year-old girls to elderly women. Stories talk about girls that get raped by people outside the home, by relatives inside the home, by teachers in schools, or even by clerics in religious institutions. The victim may go to the police for justice, but then there are also cases of women getting raped inside of police stations when they go to report the violence committed against them.
We talk about educating about violence against women in Bangladesh, but in some cases, female students have been harassed by teachers in school, from the Mohila Madrasa - a girls Islamic school - to well-known higher educational institutions. On May 14, 2009, the High Court of Bangladesh pronounced a judgment to prevent sexual abuse of women at the office, educational institutions and all types of governmental, non-governmental and other organizations.
Especially for minority girls and women, Bangladesh is an extremely fearful place. As soon as a girl is born into a minority family, they have to worry about whether she will be raped by Muslims and how they will save her from that fate. Obviously, not all minority girls and women are raped, but there are uncounted numbers who are, especially in Bangladesh's Hindu community. At the dawn of each day, there is another article about a minority woman or girl who either was raped, maybe even murdered, or committed suicide after rape.
Mili Rani Malakar, a 13-year-old Hindu girl was abducted and gang raped by local Muslims at Sylhet on May 1, 2008; later on, with a battered body and shattered mind, out of fear and extreme shame, the poor girl committed suicide. It must be noted that it’s not the men who commit suicide out of fear and shame, but the girl who was beaten, broken and raped by beasts. It reminds me of the quote by famous U.S. author, educator and theorist Freda Adler, “Rape is the only crime in which the victim becomes the accused.”
All the major religions that are practiced here in Bangladesh are male-dominated organizations. In their holy books, creation begins with a man, “Adam”, who establishes pleasure and perfection on a woman “Eve”. The Abrahamic faiths differ from one another in many things, but they are united in this beginning story, which begins the history of male domination and which ends in today's daily life practices. From Adam to the great Prophet Mohammed, all of the prophets were male.
Bangladesh has a vast population practicing and following Islam in their lives. Islam initially controls their way of life. In Islam, the Prophet Mohammed left an example by having sexual relations with different women, from Aisha, the six- or seven-year-old daughter of Abu Bakr, to elderly women, as well as by having thirteen wives or concubines.
In different religions, the institution of marriage has tried to restrain the male, who is normally a polygamist by nature. Especially the Prophet Mohammed, who had several wives, set an example before the followers of Islam of being an extreme polygamist.
The Roman philosopher Seneca advocated that, “Injustice never rules forever.” The injustice that is going on in Bangladesh against women and girls will not continue forever if we can dig out the rotten teachings of religions, especially of Islam, that lead people to be polygamists, encourage male domination and deprive women by making them dependents. We need to hasten the day when men and women will be treated equally, when beauty will not be a curse, but will be a blessing for all.

Its monthly and annual reports are used by foreign embassies and media to also keep track of violations such as extra-judicial killings, torture as well as rape, dowry, and acid crimes. In 2008 the U.S. State Department honored Odhikar, which means rights in Bengali, with the runner-up prize of its Freedom Defenders award. One of the foci of Odhikar, which rejects donations to stay independent, are violations of women's rights. Odhikar Program Coordinator Sazzad Hussein says it's good that with Sheik Hasina for the Awami League and Begum Khaleda Zia for the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) two females lead the major parties in the country, but being a woman doesn't mean that politics change for the rest of the female population. Despite repeated attempts to initiate projects to advance women little has changed in politics over the past 15 years he says in an interview

family of the Dhaka diocese, under the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, was attacked by local Muslims on Oct. 22, 2009, at around 7:30 p.m. Some people fired guns aimed at the house of the Catholic family. The St. Lawrence Catholic Church is a Catholic church with 1,000 Catholic families.
Rita Gomes, the elder daughter of the family, said, "Our Muslim neighbor, Kazi Babul's wife, and her allies have been trying to evict us from the house for more than a year."
"On Oct. 8, 2009, a group of 150 Muslims came to our house and forcefully put up a wall and took possession of our land, in the presence of the local police," said Gomes.
Rita Gomes said, "There was an injunction from the court about the land that they are claiming for their own, so they cannot put up a wall or do anything without violating the court order. When they came with a group of 150 Muslims on Oct. 8, 2009, to put up the wall, I went to request them not to do that. In the presence of the police, they hit me, yet the police remain silent. I felt very helpless at that time; I realized that even the law enforcement agency people wouldn't come to help me."
She went on to say, "My father is very sick, my mother is very helpless and prays to Mother Mary for our protection, and my younger sister, Jhumur, who will soon become a nun, prays and prays for our safety."
Jhumur Gomes, the younger daughter of the family, said, "I am just praying and preparing to sacrifice myself for the sacred life. Our family is in full danger; we don’t know what will happen next or if they will come and kill us."
The Bishop of Khulna, Rev. Bejoy N. Cruze, who was visiting Dhaka, came to the house of the persecuted Christians and offered a prayer for them, especially for Jhumur, the younger daughter, who will join the sacred life.
Rita Gomes said, "I am really very afraid that they may kill us or rape me and my younger sister; they are really very ferocious. Our other neighbors, another Catholic family, were forced to sell their land, and they finally went to India. The Muslim neighbors also proposed for us to sell our land to them, but where will we go? As we are Christians, no one is coming to help us; all the Muslims are on their side, because they have money and are powerful politically. They have strong ties with the leading political party, the Bangladesh Awami League party that is ruling Bangladesh."
She went on to say, "There was a nameplate for our house with a cross on the main door of the house that they had removed. In its place, they put 'Allahu Akbar,' or Allah is great. We were confined to our house for days, because they blocked the road, so that we cannot leave the house.
"My father, Sunil Gomes, and my mother, Usha Gomes, are both aged; if something happened to us, they might get heart attacks, especially my father who has heart disease and who got sick after such an attack."
Sunil Gomes said, "I want to leave in peace. If something bad happened to my daughters, if they get raped or killed, I couldn't take it. I have heart disease and am already sick and in bed."
His wife, Usha Gomes, said, "I helplessly watched the crowd beat my older daughter, Rita, when she protested against them putting a wall on our land. Christ is our only hope now, the only one who can save us from this danger."
She also said, "We voted for the Bangladesh Awami League in the last parliamentary elections with very high hopes that we will have peace and will be given security by their government, but now the political activists of the party are using their political identity to persecute us and steal our lands. The perpetrators are rich Muslims who are large in number; they want to evict us from our own land, as they did to our Christian neighbors, forcing them to sell their land and to leave for India. We are now fully cornered here in Bangladesh, and we do not have security of life."
Catholic human rights activist Annie Halder said, "The persecution of minorities is growing nowadays. Recently, there was a Christian evangelist, Swopon Mondol, who was killed, and now there are attacks against Christian families, and there are many attacks on Hindus. The government should take immediate action to secure the rights of minorities."
