Halima Begum's daughter Cameli was a 2nd year student of Shah Ali Mohila Degree College. She got married to Monir Hossain without the knowledge of her family on 22.5.02. On 15.5.02, her Mother came to know of Cameli’s marriage and pregnancy. Halima took her to Monir's house on 18.5.02 at about 11 am. On that day Cameli's brother-in-law Akhtar abused her with indecent harsh words and beat her mercilessly. A GD was filed at Mirpur P.S on the matter. After filing GD, she came back to her Mother's house. On 19.5.02 Halima again went with Cameli to Monir's house. Monir, Shahrior (Monir’s brother) and Akhter (Monir's brother-in-law) asked 1 lac taka for dowry. Cameli refused to give the dowry. As a result, accused Monir Hossain, Akhter, Monsur Ali, Shipra and Shahriar's wife beat Cameli inhumanly and kicked her on lower abdomen. Cameli started bleeding from her female organ but even then they got her out of Monir's house. Cameli came back to her Mother's house and Halima and her elder daughter took her to Shohid Sohrawardy Hospital on 20.5.02 where she was VSG tested. As her condition deteriorated at DMCH, she was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Comeli got an abortion and Halima filed a case along with the USG report under sec 11(c)/30 of Women and Child Repression Prevention Act 2000.

BNWLA assisted the public prosecutors to conduct their case. On 10.7.08, the Honorable Nari O Shishu Norjatan Daman Tribunal gave a verdict against Monir Hossain and Akhter. They were given 3 years imprisonment. The Tribunal also fined with Tk 5000 each and in default of paying that fine they will suffer six months imprisonment. Accused Shamima was acquitted.

On 08.04.04, the victim Shilpi, niece of Nur Hossain, wedded Liton, the accused, in an arranged marriage. Liton gave a proposal to Shilpi to take her to India but Shilpi refused his proposal. Liton convinced her by saying that other girls were going to India for employment. Shilpi agreed and informed Nur Hossain about the matter. Nur Hossain discovered after investigation that there were 3 more people with Liton and one other girl who was interested to go to India. After asking the girl , Nur Hossain found out that there were two more girls, from Jessore and Jhinidaho, at the Benapole Checkpost to go to India. They had also been recruited with the allurement of well-paid jobs. Nur Hossain rescued the victims with the help of the local inhabitants and also filed a case against the accused.

BNWLA provided legal support to the complainant. The charge-sheet was submitted in the Court on 3.6.04 under Sec. 5 (1) of Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000. Then the case went to trial. Consequently, the Honorable judges gave a verdict against the opposite party. The accused were convicted and given sentence to suffer life imprisonment and fined for Tk 20,000 (twenty thousand) each. Or in default of the fine, they had to suffer 2 years of further imprisonment.

Shohor Ali’s son, a camel jockey

Sohel (8) is the son of Shohor Ali who was born in the Gopchar village of Narayanganj. The complainant, Shohor Ali is a very poor day laborer and lives as a tenant in the Shahid Nagar area. There he became acquainted with the cunning Sonai Bibi of the neighboring house. Since their acquaintance, at different times Sonai Bibi tempted Shohor Ali by saying that she will give his first wife’s son Sohel a very good job. Shohor Ali naively agrees to Sonai Bibi’s proposal and on the 15th Ramadan day on 25/1/1997, Sonai Bibi took Sohel to Dhaka at her relative Fayez Patowar’s house. Eventually Shohor Ali heard that his son Sohel was trafficked by Sonai Bibi to her children in Dubai through her above mentioned relative Fayez Patowari.

Shohor Ali then lodged ejahar against Sonai Bibi at the police station to rescue his son, the police arrested Sonai Bibi. It must be mentioned that Sonai Bibi, through her relative Fayez Patowari, has trafficked 1) Alam 2) Mannan 3) Monir Hossein 4) Babu Hossein 5) Jewel 6) Titu 7) Sagar 8) Maizuddin and 9) Shumon of the Shahid Nagar village in a similar manner to her children in Dubai. From amongst them, Titu, Sagar and Shumon came back to the country and informed everyone that they had met Sohel there, working with them as a camel jockey.

Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association provided legal support to the complainant. After considering all the evidence, on 08/09/2009, the Honorable Court gave a judgment against the opposite party and sentenced the accused to suffer life imprisonment.

The success story of Mina

This story is about a girl named Mina, age 20 and who has successfully established herself as a working women in the society, struggling for a long period of time, fighting against all barriers of the society. Mina was 3rd among the 7 siblings. Her father was a clerk of court and her mother was housewife. One day she decided to go to Dhaka to get a job in garments factory. During that time she was trapped by three agents and they sold her at Narayangang Taan Bazar. The agents made a license for her through Rotary Public by increasing her age falsely and forced her to engage in prostitution. Moreover, she was tortured by those agents badly when ever she refused to do the job. Some days later she was rescued by police and sent to Narayangang Jail. After three months she was again sent to Dhaka Central Jail. When she was staying in Dhaka Jail, she took training of embroidery and earned some money by doing the job. With the help of BNWLA she was freed from jail and after that she came to BNWLA in order to get legal support to carry out her case and reintegrate her with her family again.



At the beginning Mina was mentally upset and completely broke down when she came to BNWLA for help. The counselors of BNWLA helped her to recover the mental condition by continuous process of counseling and soon she became normal and started to take various training like CRC, Life Skill, computer training etc. As a result of these training she started to feel self sufficient and became interested to live a self reliant life. Considering her eagerness to live a self dependent life BNWLA arranged her a training in security firm named, Group 4, and from there with the help of group 4, Mina got a job of security guard in British Council at Chittagong. Along with this job she also received training on knitting from garments factory and after completing her training successfully she got a job in EPZ. At present she is working as a supervisor. The most remarkable part of Mina’s life story is that, with her extraordinary determination she did not become self sufficient alone but also helped her elder sister and sister’s husband to get job in EPZ. Thus Mina proved that, strength of mind, hard work can make a person skilled and self dependent, moreover, a self reliant person can help others to become independent.

Title: A married couple (Nur Chehara and Harun Miah) was punished with 101 Dorrahhs and restriction imposed up on going out of their house.

Place of incident: The incidence occurred about 60 to 70 km. away from Golachipa at Village Nalua, union Charmuntaz.

Summary of the incident: Two years back Nur Cehara, daughter of Hatem Miah from Goja Gram, Panpatti got married to Harun son of Quddus Mia from Uttar Char Lokhi. Their first child named Ador died after birth and Nur Chehara became very sick after the delivery of the child. However, it cost a lot of money for her treatment and on the basis of the high cost of treatment they were having arguments with each other often. One day, at one point of their argument out of anger Nur Chehara’s husband Harun uttered “talak” three times and as a result Nur Chehara left her husband’s place and went to her father’s house. After staying some days in her father’s place she went to Dhaka from where she called her husband by mobile phone and requested him to come to Dhaka. They stayed in Dhaka for one months and again came back to their home. Nevertheless, this time instead of going to their father in law’s place they stayed in a near by village and started pulling rickshaw for make their living. In this situation Harun’s father came to know about this matter and requested some influential people of the village to arrange a shalish in order to resolve this matter according to shariah so that his son and daughter in law can return back home. On the basis of statement of Quddus Mia, some fotwabaz people of the locality arranged a shalish in the place of Khukumoni, member of the village. However, the decision of shalish was to punish the couple with 101 Dorrahh and they have to except hillah marriage and then after they would get married to each other again.
